Understanding ADHD and ADD

What was once known as two different types of hyperactivity disorders has now been combined under one term, ADHD. Experts have begun to phase out the term ADD, saying it is outdated and the characteristics that once separated ADD from ADHD will now be under the same umbrella.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, more commonly known as ADHD, is seen as one of the most common mental disorders that affect children into adulthood. Although adults may have fewer symptoms as they continue to age, some adults continue to have major symptoms. There are three main types of ADHD:

  • Predominantly inattentive presentation: People diagnosed with the inattentive type have challenges staying focused, on task, and organized.
  • Predominantly hyperactive/impulsive presentation: Individuals diagnosed with the hyperactive type of ADHD struggle with excessive energy and fidgeting and impulsivity to take action without considering the consequences.
  • Combined presentation: A combined presentation occurs when criteria for inattentive and hyperactive/impulse types are both being met.

Symmetry Counseling in Texas encourages individuals and families to meet with their primary care provider or one of our certified counselors to discuss concerns and next steps. Our virtual counseling services are available for anyone needing assistance with their diagnosis.

Symptoms of ADHD

Although both children and adults can present with ADHD, the key indicators can appear quite differently. Children with ADHD might:

  • Forget or lose things frequently
  • Fidget
  • Excessive talking
  • Take unnecessary risks

While there are more symptoms that can occur, these are the main symptoms presented in children. Adults can have similar symptoms but they can become more severe. Adults with ADHD symptoms may include:

  • Disorganized and problems prioritizing
  • Low frustration tolerance
  • Frequent mood swings
  • Trouble multitasking

If you have been diagnosed with ADHD, Symmetry Counseling in Texas provides counseling services to help clients learn more about the diagnosis and show clients how to manage ADHD triggers.

The Effects of ADHD

The effects of ADHD can be minimal or severe if it’s not managed correctly. ADHD in children can affect self-esteem and social function. This can create problems as these children become adults, leading to sensitivity toward criticism, poor self-worth, and a temper. It can be frustrating to cope with a diagnosis that is difficult to understand. ADHD has many similarities and differences between people so it can be hard to find someone to relate to. Our licensed online counselors have experience working with clients with differentiating ADHD symptoms and understand it’s a learning process.
